About Pedro Barilari
From the foothills of the Andes mountains, in Rio Negro, the Barilari family immigrated to Miami at the turn of the century, when Pedro was 11 years old. Growing up in the margins of society, writing became one of the only ways he could freely exercise his voice, a solid path to secure some record of his being.
As a poet, he values the dialogue that is exchanged in between performances as the art with the greatest potential for peacebuilding. Pedro’s writing broadened from song lyrics to a freeform verse immersed in nature’s language. His record of the everyday landscapes of our precious Everglades remains as proof that one can appreciate, protect, and learn from one’s environment with a profound sense of belonging, even if society may be divisive at times. Poetics served as a vehicle to learn how to internalize knowledge and anchor meaning in rhythms, which helped reignite his joy for learning. This renewed curiosity led to a scholarship to study early childhood development.
It is to repay his gratitude for this treasure that Pedro dedicates all his writing to education and finding creative ways to empower youth. To this end, he now composes lectures and essays, where he focuses on the poetics of the Everglades, and human history Earthwide. His daughter, Lily, inspired him to start writing children’s books as they walked outdoors daily, paying careful attention to each detail and learning to understand the rhythms of nature. He currently lives in South Florida, working as a tutor, and striving to draw forth the poetry within each encounter
